+David was unable to attend this week's meeting but sent some notes.  He is preparing a branch to demonstrate his refactored search system and will send a pull request with commentary soon.  He also commented that when integrating his VuFindHttp module, the convenience functions should be used carefully to avoid creating too many hard dependencies on the service class.
