Release 8.1 Planning
VuFind® 8.1 is scheduled for release on July 18, 2022. Demian is working on wrapping up all outstanding work on the release; if there is any outstanding work that you wish to have included in the release, please let him know as soon as possible.
Theme Improvements
Following discussion at the March Community Call, GitHub discussions were turned on for the project and a theme development category was opened to facilitate further discussion. So far, there has not been further engagement, but please feel free to start a discussion there to continue the conversation. In the meantime, work and conversation is also proceeding in several open pull requests.
Authority Data Enhancements
Demian opened JIRA tickets for all of the ideas discussed at last month's meeting. Please feel free to claim/comment as needed.
Ere demonstrated some new authority functionality in Finna which allows author and subject links to display a drop-down menu offering different options (e.g. alternate search options, related terms, links to authority module, etc.). Demian opened a JIRA ticket (VUFIND-1561) to describe the enhanced linking feature so that Ere can share screen shots there.
2. Other Topics?
Demian mentioned that pull request #2417 is nearing completion and might be worth reviewing if you are interested in star ratings in VuFind. Ere provided a quick demonstration. Claas offered to help with accessibility review of this functionality. Mario suggested displaying the star ratings in association with user comments (perhaps as a configurable option; Ere will implement when time permits). Robert asked whether ratings impact search rankings – not at this time (in part due to complexity, in part due to abuse potential). Demian suggested that a Solr file-based field might enable this in the future if necessary. Ere also mentioned the “Learning to Rank” Solr feature as a possibility.
Demian also mentioned the 2022 VuFind Summit; the call for paper just closed, so scheduling will begin soon and more details should be shared in the near future.
