VuFind® Community Call Minutes: August 2, 2022

Attending: Demian Katz, Josef Moravec, Mario Trojan

Agenda

1. Development Planning

Newsletter Highlights

The July, 2022 Newsletter was discussed.

Laminas\Db to Doctrine Conversion

Demian has made some progress on pull request #2233, though there is still an enormous amount of work remaining to be done.

Citation Style Language

Work has continued on pull request #1324.

Release 8.1

The release went out on time. Some late translations and minor bug fixes mean that there will be an 8.1.1 release eventually (but there is no strong reason not to use 8.1 for now).

Theme Improvements

Chris has continued working on various theme-related pull requests, making progress on infrastructure to support the next theme design. Several accessibility-related pull requests have also been submitted.

Authority Data Enhancements

No news.

Blowfish Encryption

The latest release of OpenSSL (3.0) has deprecated Blowfish encryption, which is VuFind®'s default for encrypting ILS credentials. See VUFIND-1563 for a workaround. We should discuss changing VuFind®'s default behavior to avoid problems in the future.

No one on the call had strong feelings about the selection of a replacement algorithm, but Demian will do research and make a recommendation when time permits (unless someone else does so first).

Since VuFind® already includes a command line tool to convert encrypted credentials from one algorithm to another, there should be little difficulty in solving this problem technically – just a matter of picking the new approach and documenting the migration process.

2. Other Topics?

The Project Management Committee will be discussing the format of the Community Call later this month to brainstorm ideas on making the most of this time. Please feel free to send ideas with any member of the group if you have some to share.

Mario mentioned that the “Specialized Information Services” work being discussed at WOLFcon and the upcoming VuFind® Summit suggests a movement toward greater collaboration/participation (possibly linked to project funding), which could inspire greater community engagement in the future. He hopes that this will result in greater engagement with the existing community rather than the creation of new community fragments.

Mario asked about release timing for 8.1.1, as he hopes to be able to upgrade this Fall; Demian is confident that a release can be made in time (just a matter of collecting a few outstanding translations, and fixing any new bugs discovered along the way).

Josef reported the results of an accessibility audit done for the Czech community. VuFind® is one of the best catalogs in terms of accessibility, though there are still some minor problems need to be addressed. He will look at existing accessibility-related PRs and may open additional ones as needed.

Next Call

:!: We will skip the September Community Call due to its proximity to the 2022 Virtual Summit.

The next call will be Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 9am Eastern Daylight Time (13:00 GMT).
