VuFind Summit 2017

Acknowledgements

Part of the cost of this year's conference was funded through a generous donation from Agilent Technologies, Inc., a global company focused in the life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical markets.

Cost and Registration

Registration costs will be $60 per person. Registration covers both days of the conference and will include light breakfast and lunch. Speakers accepted into the final schedule do not have to pay and are not required to register (apart from the submission of their talk proposal).

Registration has not yet opened; please check back soon!

Dates and Location

The 2017 developers summit will take place at Villanova University on October 9 and 10, 2017.

Transportation and Lodgings

Some lodging options can be found here; see the Villanova site for transportation suggestions.

Call for Proposals

We are currently accepting proposals for 20-minute talks (and we would be willing to accommodate longer talks if the subject matter justified them). Subjects could include new features (existing or proposed), implementation details (architecture or key technologies), inspiration (user feedback, design patterns, best practices), interesting VuFind instances (special projects, etc.) or anything else touching on VuFind or related projects. Please submit proposals to Demian Katz (demian DOT katz AT villanova DOT edu).

Proposals must be submitted by Friday, September 15, 2017.

Remote Participation

As with past events, we plan to record and live-stream the structured portion of the event. More details will be forthcoming as the schedule is finalized.

Detailed Talk Descriptions

Demian Katz - State of the Project, Q&A

In this talk, Demian will review what is new and what has changed since the last Summit as well as discuss some areas of future work that may help inform discussion during the afternoon's roadmapping session, where decisions will be made about the direction of the next major release. Time will be included for Q&A.

Benjamin Mosior - Open-Source Strategy: The Disruptive Potential of VuFind as a Service

Discovery solutions are a critical and enabling component of the library ecosystem, but the barrier to entry for making use of one can be significant. Cost, staff, skills, time, and project management overhead can slow or altogether prevent an institution's fulfillment of this important service for patrons. One 2016 report estimated that 62% of libraries around the world have not purchased and do not plan to purchase a discovery service. Is it fair to say that these inhibiting factors might be part of the cause?

What might become possible if we significantly diminish these hurdles? How might we make that happen? It all starts with a map of the strategic landscape, a little sysadmin know-how, and some entrepreneurial spirit.

Additional talk descriptions coming soon….
